Magnitude 4.2 earthquake shakes Hualien

Taipei, May 26 (CNA) A magnitude-4.2 earthquake off the coast of Hualien County rocked eastern Taiwan at 3:17 p.m. Thursday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The quake was centered at sea 26.8 kilometers north northeast of Hualien County government hall at a depth of 11.9 km, the bureau's seismology data shows. No damage or injuries had been reported as of press time.

An intensity of 3 was registered in Heping Township and Taroko National Park in Hualien, and in Nan'ao Township in Yilan County, according to the bureau. An intensity of 1 was registered in some other parts of Hualien and Yilan counties. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 0-7, which measures the degree to which the quake is felt in a particular location. (By Lin Yi-feng and Kuo Chung-han)
