Youbike service begins test run in Hsinchu

Youbike in Hsinchu began a test run Thursday, joining the nine other cities and counties in Taiwan that provide bike rental services to the public.

Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien (林智堅) and King Liu (劉金標), chairman of the Giant Group, which designed the Youbike system, rode the bikes together to mark the start of the test run.

The Hsinchu city government signed a cooperation agreement with Giant last December to install the bike rental system, and the firm has now completed the installation of 10 sites, with 450 bikes in service.

Lin estimated that a total of 30 rental sites in the city will be installed, with more than 750 bikes.

He noted that there are 28 historical sites or sites of architectural interest within one square kilometer of the Hsinchu old city area, including the 186-year-old East Gate and the 102-year-old Hsinchu Railway Station.

He invited visitors to appreciate the beauty of the city through leisurely bike rides.

The city government has said that to encourage the use of the bike rental system, the first 30 minutes of the trial run period will be free.

There will also be a lucky draw, as well as a giveaway of brand-name bags during the period between May 26 and June 30, Giant said.

At present, public bike rental services are available in Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung, as well as in Changhua and Pingtung counties.
