New train ticket booking system due for Dragon Boat Festival

Taipei, May 23 (CNA) The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) announced late Monday that it will use an ID-based ticket booking system for passengers traveling by train between Taipei and eastern parts of Taiwan for the coming Dragon Boat Festival.

According to the MOTC, from July 1, passengers whose ID number starts with the English letters U or V are allowed to book tickets for trains on the Taipei-Taitung route at seven Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) stations in Taipei, Songshan, Banqiao, Hualien, Yuli, Taitung and Guanshan.

The service was devised to better process the anticipated large volumes of passengers traveling between Taipei and Hualien and Taitung in eastern Taiwan during the June 6 - June 9 Dragon Boat Festival, the MOTC said.

It will only be available for a train from Taipei to Taitung on June 9 and a train from Taitung to Taipei on June 12, TRA Director- General Chou Yung-hui (???) elaborated in a legislative hearing on Monday.

Detailed information will be available on the TRA official website from May 25. Difficulties in getting train tickets to eastern Taiwan are one of the major complaints of the public, in particular among residents in Hualien and Taitung, where many scenic spots also draw large numbers of visitors from home and abroad.

Along with the new measure, the MOTC also announced that the toll-free period from 23:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m on the national highways will be canceled during the four-day Dragon Boat Festival in a bid to reduce late-night traffic accidents and encourage the public to take public transport.
