City god pilgrimage highlights cultural festival in Kinmen

Taipei, May 22 (CNA) A mass pilgrimage of the city god, a local deity, around outlying Kinmen County, was the highlight of an annual religious cultural festival that came to an end over the weekend, according to the organizers. As part of this year's Wudao festival, the "Welcoming the city god" parade took place Wednesday, drawing crowds of followers who participated in hopes of being blessed. The centuries-old pilgrimage is the largest religious activity in Kinmen, and the city god is believed by local people to be a guardian of their city. Statues of city gods from other temples in Taiwan and China were also brought to Kinmen to take part in the pilgrimage. The religious activity incorporates a series of traditional rituals, while costumed and merry-making devotees follow the city god in the progression around the island county. Due to its cultural significance, it has been designated as "a significant folk activity" by the Ministry of Culture. This year's festival kicked off April 18 and featured several folk performances and activities. It ended on Saturday with a concert and blessing. (By Amy Huang and Elaine Hou)
