U.S. economic diplomat to visit Taiwan

Taipei, March 25 (CNA) Kurt Tong, principal deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, will visit Taiwan from March 28-30, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said Friday.

While in Taiwan, Tong will give a speech at the American Chamber of Commerce's annual Hsieh Nien Fan banquet and hold discussions with Taiwan officials on a wide range of economic matters of importance to the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, the AIT said in a statement.

Tong has been an economic affairs diplomat for the State Department since 1990, serving in South Korea, Japan, China and the Philippines, as well as in Washington, according to the AIT.

He previously served as the deputy chief of mission in Tokyo and as the U.S. ambassador for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), AIT said. (By Tang Pei-chun and Y.F. Low)
