Early morning earthquake shakes Yilan, Taipei

An earthquake measuring 4.5 magnitude occurred in Yilan County early Saturday morning, shaking northern, northeastern and central Taiwan, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The earthquake, which took place at 2:11 a.m., was centered in Jiaoxi Township, some 8.5 kilometers northwest of the Yilan County hall, at a depth of 72.2 km.

An intensity reading of 3 was recorded in Yilan County and In the Xinyi District in neighboring Taipei. An intensity of 2 was detected in Yilan City and in Luodong, Newdow, Nan'ao and Nanshan in Yilan County, as well as in some parts of New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hualien and Taichung, the bureau said.

The were no reports of damage or injuries.
