Exchange Student having fun on Chinese New Year with Lantern drawing

Taipei Jingwen High School opens different Chinese traditional culture courses for six exchange students from Europe, the U.S. and Japan to experience the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations in Taiwan.

Students were taught to say greetings in Mandarin with pronunciation symbols written along to read Spring Festival scrolls aloud that were associated with the year of Monkey. Teachers explained meaning of the scrolls, e.g. [ Hou jhi kun kun lai] meaning bringing in lots of money in Taiwanese.

Drawing and painting Chinese lanterns was designed to let students learn paper cutting and experience pasting a monkey on the lantern. Rina, a Japanese student, who learned Chinese calligraphy when she was small, wrote Chinese words and painted the map of Taiwan, bubble tea, pig blood cake, and stinky tofu and other Taiwan snacks on the lantern, making it full of Taiwanese flavors.
