Warmer weather expected for Lantern Festival

Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) Cold weather will probably not be a problem for people planning to attend the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taoyuan next week, as the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has forecast that the temperature in northern Taiwan will climb to 22 degrees Celsius Feb. 22, when the event is due to officially open.

The annual festival will kick off in the area around the Taiwan High Speed Rail Taoyuan Station. On the opening day, the daytime temperature will be 22 degrees in the north, while highs in central and southern areas will reach around 25 degrees, the CWB forecast Wednesday.

However, the bureau advised people to carry umbrellas with them because the wind in northern and northeastern areas is expected to bring some showers. Before the arrival of the good weather, people on the island will still have to withstand a cold air mass, the CWB said.

Under the influence of the approaching cold front, lows in the north could be just 13 degrees on Feb. 20, with highs of 17 degrees.

On that day, when the cold air mass is expected to be at its strongest, temperatures in open areas along the coast of northern Taiwan could drop to 12 degrees, the CWB forecast. (By Chen Ting-wei and Elizabeth Hsu)
