Taiwan students design origami boat to help eradicate mosquitoes

A group of students at National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT) recently won an award for their design of a foldable paper boat infused with a herbal insect repellent.

The project, titled Hope Offer, was aimed at helping to eradicate disease-carrying mosquitoes in underdeveloped countries, said Zheng Meng-cong, an associate professor at the university's Department of Industrial Design who was the students' advisor.

The boat is an origami toy for children but the paper is infused with a plant-based repellent that kills mosquito larva in water, Zheng said, noting that malaria is still a leading cause of death in some underdeveloped countries.

The design by the team of six students won an iF Public Value Award 2016.

Meanwhile, a student team from the Master's Program of Innovation and Design at NTUT has also come with an idea to help fight infections in underdeveloped countries.

Focusing on the problem of parasitic infections in people who walk barefoot on contaminated soil, the students designed a pair of double-soled shoes that could be donated when the first sole wears out.

Under the first sole is an address to which the shoes can be sent for donation to less fortunate people.
