Taiwan's investigation chief to visit Indonesia in March

Wang Chung-yi, director general of the Ministry of Justice's Investigation Bureau, will lead a delegation to Indonesia in early March to promote cooperation between the two countries to combat transnational crime.

Wang will meet with Indonesia's national police chief Badrodin Haiti and the country's criminal police chief to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in fighting crime, an official from Taiwan's representative office in Indonesia said Wednesday.

An increasing number of Taiwanese have committed crimes in Indonesia in recent years, including online fraud, cross-border drug trafficking and economic crimes, highlighting the urgency of cooperation in the field between the two countries, the official said.

Just last week, the Supreme Court of Indonesia sentenced three Taiwanese to death for involvement in drug trafficking two years ago, the first death sentences handed down to Taiwanese nationals overseas in recent years, the official said.

Wang will visit the three Taiwanese in prison during his trip to Indonesia to see whether he or members of his delegation can provide any form of assistance, the official added. (By Jay Chou and Evelyn Kao)
