18 Chinese tourists injured in Hualien traffic accident

Eighteen Chinese tourists from Beijing and one Taiwanese tour guide were slightly injured when the tour bus in which they were traveling was hit from behind by a truck in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan on Wednesday.

Police in Hsincheng township said the tour bus was on its way to the scenic Taroko National Park when it was hit by the truck at the 190.2-kilometer mark on the No. 9 provincial highway. Police suspected that the accident was caused by the failure of the truck driver to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Hualien Armed Forces General Hospital said all 19 patients -- seven men and 12 women -- were initially diagnosed with mild concussion, as well as mild bruising to their necks. They checked out of the hospital after treatment.

Morning Star Travel, the agency that was hosting the tour group, said that all the tourists were fully covered by travel and medical insurance. (By Wang Shu-fen and Lilian Wu)
