No visa-free entry for transit stop Chinese in short term: MAC

Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) Taiwan will not allow visa-free entry to Chinese passengers making transit stops in Taiwan en route to third countries at the present time, the head of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said Tuesday.

Hsia Li-yan said that during talks with China on the issue of allowing Chinese passengers to transit through Taiwan, Taiwan "absolutely did not" discuss visa-free entry.

Hsia's remarks came one day after China officially began allowing its nationals flying from three cities -- Nanchang, Kunming and Chongqing -- to transit through Taiwan en route to a third destination.

Since 2014, Taiwan and China have been formally discussing the issue of allowing Chinese passengers to transit through Taiwan, with Taipei repeatedly pushing for the removal of relevant restrictions, which it said are hurting Taiwanese airlines. (By Yin Chun-chieh and Lilian Wu)
