Premier to visit legislative speaker

Premier Simon Chang said Tuesday that he will visit new Legislative Yuan Speaker Su Jia-chyuan Wednesday to congratulate him on his election to the top legislative post.

Su, from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was elected speaker a day earlier by winning 74 votes from the 113 lawmakers, becoming the first DPP member to preside over Taiwan's lawmaking body.

Chang said that the inauguration of the new legislature marks a new beginning and that the Cabinet will communicate with the legislators in the most sincere and respectful manner.

He expressed the hope that in the remaining four months of President Ma Ying-jeou's term, the executive and legislative branches can work out a model of interaction different from the past.

The Legislature, which began its new four-year term Monday, will hold its first meeting Feb. 19, when Chang will give a policy report and then answer lawmakers' questions.
