58 new influenza complications reported, single-week high for year

Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday that the number of influenza cases has risen quickly in Taiwan, with an additional 58 serious complications from influenza, the highest in a single week this year. The CDC said the recent continued low temperatures around Taiwan have led to the fast climb in the number of influenza cases in Taiwan.

In addition to the confirmed 58 cases of serious flu complications, there were also two fatalities related to the virus last week -- an 87-year-old man living in central Taiwan, and a 95-year-old woman living in northern Taiwan, both of whom had a history of chronic disease.

The CDC said that data from past years shows that the cases of flu sufferers seeking emergency treatment tend to peak during Lunar New Year holiday. With the coming of the long Lunar New Year holiday Feb. 6-14, the CDC urged people to seek medical treatment speedily and get plenty of rest if they develop flu-like symptoms.
