Patent applications in Taiwan decline for third straight year

Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) The number of new patent applications filed in Taiwan by domestic and foreign entities last year fell by an annual 5.6 percent to 73,627, the third consecutive annual drop, Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) said Tuesday.

The office said domestic applications declined because of more rigorous screening and a greater focus by companies on patent quality rather than quantity.

The TIPO data showed a 4.2 percent annual decline last year in invention patent applications to 44,415, and also a drop in the number of utility model and design patent applications.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker, ranked as the largest patent applicant in Taiwan in 2015, submitting only 659 applications.

In second place was Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chip maker, which submitted 503 applications.

It was TSMC's best ranking in 10 years in terms of the number of patent applications.

The government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute filed 466 applications, the third-highest number.

Among foreign companies, US-based Intel was the top patent applicant in Taiwan last year, submitting 956 applications.

Two Japanese enterprises, Toshiba Group and Tokyo Electron Limited, filled out the top three, filing 413 and 404 applications, respectively. (By Huang Chiao-wen and Evelyn Kao)
