New Legislature to hold 1st meeting Feb. 19

The Legislature that began its new four-year term on Monday will hold its first meeting on Feb. 19, during which Premier Simon Chang will lead Cabinet ministers in giving reports and then answering lawmakers' questions.

The schedule was hammered out during interparty consultations held by Su Jia-chyuan of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who was elected Monday as legislative speaker.

In an unprecedented move, the new speaker allowed reporters and cameras into the room in which the consultations were held as if to highlight the reforms being planned to increase the transparency of the legislative process.

The Legislative Yuan will initiate reforms to allow consultations to be broadcast or made public in another way in the future, Su told reporters.
