PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- A major Haitian opposition alliance is declining to meet with a regional mission that has arrived here to help mediate a solution to a political stalemate that could soon turn into a constitutional crisis.
Samuel Madistin is spokesman for the "Group of Eight" alliance that includes second-place presidential candidate Jude Celestin. Madistin said Monday that the mission by the Organization of American States "is not welcome here."
It is headed by Ronald Sanders, an Antiguan diplomat who is chairman of the OAS permanent council. The mission traveled to Haiti at the request of President Michel Martelly, who under the Constitution must leave office by Feb. 7.
Senate President Jocelerme Privert said he would meet with the mission on Monday and that officials are trying to craft a workable solution.
