STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Sweden coach Erik Hamren says he will step down after the Euro 2016 finals irrespective of how well the team has done.

Hamren said at a news conference on Monday that he pondered resignation since last year after more than six years at the helm.

His contract with the Swedish Football Association is due to end after Euro 2016 in France.

Hamren said "it feels right to quit; it's time for me to do something else," without ruling out continuing coaching at club level in Sweden.

Hamren, aged 58, took over Sweden in 2009 after Lars Lagerback for failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

At Euro 2016, Sweden is in Group E with Belgium, Italy, and Ireland.
