Agriculture, fisheries losses hit NT$3.32 billion from cold wave

Agricultural and fishery losses from the recent cold spell had increased to NT$3.32 billion (US$99.24 million) as of 11 a.m. Monday, with half of the losses having taken place in Tainan, southern Taiwan, the Council of Agriculture (COA) said.

In terms of cities and counties, Tainan suffered the biggest losses with NT$1.65 billion in damage. This was followed by losses valued at NT$839.91 million in Kaohsiung, NT$349.54 million in Chiayi County, NT$100.83 million in Pingtung County, NT$95.25 million in Yunlin County and NT$93.15 million in Changhua County.

Fisheries losses amounted to NT$2.87 billion, primarily because of damage to milkfish, grouper, clam, tilapia, striped bass and kaname perch stocks, the COA said.

The agricultural losses were estimated at NT$445.02 million, it added. The damaged crops were mainly grapes, tomatoes, wax apples, strawberries and pears.

The poultry industry suffered NT$640,000 in damage, mainly due to the loss of hogs, chickens and young ostriches.
