Taiwan active in volunteer services: president

Taiwanese people are very involved in volunteer services, contributing 90 million hours of charity work over the past three years, according to Health Ministry statistics.

President Ma Ying-jeou praised the volunteer workers Monday during an award ceremony for civic-minded people who have made great contributions.

There are over 920,000 volunteers in Taiwan, Ma said, citing government statistics.

That amount of service could translate to some NT$10.7 billion (US$321.5 million) if they were actually paid, a value that could even be underestimated, Ma said.

The figure shows that the degree of volunteer service development in Taiwan is up there with highly developed countries, which suggests Taiwanese people's willingness to share and contribute, he said.
