Taiwan cracks down on poaching by Chinese fishing boats

Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) launched an expanded operation Saturday to crack down on poaching in many of the country's territorial waters by Chinese fishing boats.

The operation was carried out simultaneously in Taiwan's northern, central and southern waters as well as in waters surrounding the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen, Penghu and Matsu islands.

In Kinmen, located less than 10 kilometers off the Chinese coast where poaching by Chinese fishermen is especially rampant, six Coast Guard vessels were dispatched to perform the operation.

Tseng Chung-chih, deputy chief of the CGA's 9th (Kinmen) Offshore Flotilla, said that in 2015 the Coast Guard confiscated nine Chinese fishing boats and imposed NT$8.45 million (US$252,400) in fines on 45 boats operating illegally in Kinmen's waters.

A total of 151 Chinese fishermen were detained temporarily while their cases were investigated, Tseng said.
