Taipei automobile show draws 240,000 visitors in 9 days

Taipei, Jan. 3 (CNA) The 2016 Taipei International Auto Show attracted 240,000 visitors in the nine-day exhibition from Dec. 26 to Jan. 3, the highest in nearly 10 years, the organizer said Sunday.

The number of visitors grew by 20 percent from the previous year, said the Taipei Automobile Distribution Association.

The buying atmosphere was also high in the show, with the orders placed for a total of more than 5,500 new cars, an increase of over 10 percent from the previous year, the association said.

This was the first time the auto show, the 21st of its kind, was held in both the Taipei World Trade Center's Exhibition Hall 1 and the Nangang Exhibition Hall.

Car dealers have predicted a bullish automobile market in Taiwan this year, thanks to a commodity tax cut of NT$50,000 (US$1,512) for buyers who replace a vehicle aging six years or older with a new one within a six-month period. Starting Jan. 8, the tax cut will be enforced. Car dealers said those who want to replace their old cars with new ones can already enjoy the subsidy-like treatment now.
