Taipei Metro extends service hours for New Year's Eve

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Taipei's metro services will run throughout the night between Thursday and Friday for people celebrating the beginning of the new year, according to the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (TRTC).

Metro services will be available between midnight Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday in addition to regular operating hours for people taking part in countdown events and New Year's Day celebrations, the TRTC said.

People planning to go to the countdown party in front of Taipei City Hall and the Taipei 101 firework display in Xinyi District are asked to get off one station ahead, since some services will not make stops at these two metro stations, TRTC added.

The countdown party at City Hall a year ago attracted 1.18 million people, according to the Taipei city government.

Meanwhile, the service hours of the Maokong Gondola cable car will be extended to 2 a.m., TRTC noted.

Bus services on nearly 70 routes in the City Hall area will run through either 1:30 a.m. or 2 a.m., according to the Taipei City Department of Transportation. Meanwhile, 20 YouBike public bicycle rental stations around the countdown party at City Hall will be closed from Thursday night to 5 a.m. Friday, because of traffic control measures that ban all vehicles in the area, the department pointed out.
