New Year holiday travelers urged to arrive early at airport

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Those planning to travel abroad during the New Year holiday should arrive at the airport one hour before the recommended check-in time to avoid an anticipated spike in traveler volume, the Taoyuan International Airport Co. said Thursday.

The company, which operates the country's major gateway, said the peak travel time between Dec. 29 and Jan. 6 could see 45 extra flights, and urged passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before boarding.

Some 110,000 passengers are expected each day during the period, a 10 percent growth from a year ago, it said.

While 78 percent of the traveler increase will be concentrated in Terminal 1, the airport said it could be the most crowded Dec. 30 and Jan. 3, with eight and nine extra flights scheduled, respectively.

Passengers can use online check-in prior to their arrival at the airport or choose self check-in kiosks on site to save time, the airport suggested. (By Chiu Chun-chin and Lee Hsin-Yin)
