Take your trash with you: Ko

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je reminded New Year’s Eve revelers not to leave their trash behind after the countdown party at the city’s Xinyi District.

Ko posted on his Facebook page Thursday saying he hopes the city’s street janitors working the late-night shift can get home early after completing the clean-up before the New Year flag-raising ceremony at 6 a.m. Friday.

The annual countdown party will begin at 7 p.m. in front of Taipei City Hall, featuring top pop stars, including Taiwanese divas A-mei and Jeannie Hsieh. The mayor will join the revelers minutes before midnight and count down to the New Year and 238 seconds of fireworks at Taipei 101.

“While many people are slated to party all-night long, there are those that need to stay behind to clean up the mess,” Ko quoted.

Taipei City’s Department of Environmental Protection again encouraged people to help keep the venue clean as it will be setting up 264 moveable garbage cans tonight to collect trash more quickly.

Moreover, 800 street janitors will be mobilized for the clean-up.

“If everyone can show consideration for others, and keep the street clean, then everyone can go home happy,” Ko said.
