Mobile data carriers gearing up for high New Year's Eve demand

Local telecom operators said Wednesday they are preparing for an expected spike in mobile data transmission on New Year's Eve, with some anticipating an increase of over 100 percent in data use from last year.

To meet the explosive demand, Chunghwa Telecom said, it will increase the capacity of both its 3G and 4G Internet connectivity by 100 percent from a year earlier with the installation of an additional 170 mobile base stations and related facilities islandwide.

The mobile stations will be installed near hot spots such as Taipei City Hall, Taichung Stadium and the Dream Mall in Kaohsiung City, said Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecom services provider in Taiwan.

The company said it will also put 300 engineers on standby during the holiday to ensure quality connectivity.

Taiwan Star, meanwhile, said it will set up mobile base stations at locations such as Taipei City Hall, Taichung Stadium, and Kaohsiung's Dream Mall and E-Da World, where large crowds usually gather for New Year's Eve countdown parties, so as to maintain smooth operations during that period.
