NPP leader sues media tycoon

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – New Power Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang filed a suit Wednesday against one of Taiwan’s wealthiest media tycoons, Want Want China Times Group Chairman Tsai Eng-meng.
Huang, who is running for a legislative seat in Xizhi, New Taipei City, said Tsai and four others should be sued for aggravated defamation and for attempting to make him lose the election.
The conflict was based on reports by Tsai’s Chinese-language China Times newspaper contrasting Huang’s criticism of China and of the government’s pro-China policies with his father-in-law’s investments in the communist country.
Huang said his wife’s father, Kao Hsi-chih, had rented agricultural land in the Chinese province of Shandong, but a picture of buildings published by the China Times had nothing to do with him. Reports that Kao had invested in a car parts factory were totally false, Huang said, emphasizing that the factory had been closed and had not received any funds from Kao in the first place.
During his news conference at the Shilin District Prosecutors Office, Huang was reportedly asked questions by Want Want China Times Group reporters for at least 40 minutes.
A book he had contributed to had been published in China with the text describing Taiwan as “the Taiwan area,” a term widely seen as negating the island’s sovereignty and independence. Huang accused the Chinese publisher of having unilaterally changed his text to conform to official Chinese practice.
Huang, an Academia Sinica scholar, gained a high profile as one of the leaders of the Sunflower Movement which occupied the Legislative Yuan in March and April last year in a protest against the government’s attempt to pass a trade-in-services pact with China without the promised thorough legislative review.
He later co-founded the NPP, which includes several prominent social activists and former Sunflower Movement leaders. The party has several local candidates for the January 16 legislative election, including Huang, and has also present a list of at-large candidates.
