Taiwanese passport holders can now obtain visa waivers, landing visas or e-visas to 161 countries and territories, as three more countries have been added to Taiwan’s list of visa-friendly countries.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Wednesday, starting in January the Republic of Chile will be granting Taiwanese passport holders visa-free access, while the Republic of Uzbekistan offers Taiwan landing visa treatment, and the Republic of Rwanda offers Taiwanese travelers with e-visa access.

The 161 countries and territories that have given Taiwan visa privileges include the United States, Japan and all 28 European Union member states. It covers most of the areas frequented by Taiwanese travelers, according to the ministry.

Based on the annual Visa Restrictions Index for 2015 published by Henley & Partners, a leader in residence and citizenship planning, Taiwan’s passport was ranked 28th best in the world, which has moved up more than 20 places in the index over the last 10 years.
