Fewer job vacancies reported in Taiwan

There were 199,000 job vacancies in Taiwan's industrial and service sectors at the end of August, translating into a job vacancy rate of 2.61 percent, according to the results of a semi-yearly survey released by the government Monday.

The number of vacancies was down 41,000 from February and 39,000 from the same month last year, mainly due to an economic slowdown, the Directorate Generate of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said.

The job vacancy rate, meanwhile, was down 0.56 percentage points from February and 0.54 percentage points from the year-earlier level, the DGBAS said.

At the end of August, there were 73,000 vacancies in the manufacturing sector, accounting for 36.5 percent of the total.

The second-largest number of vacancies was found in the wholesale and retail trades at 38,000, which accounted for 19 percent of the total. There were 16,000 vacancies in the hospitality sector, accounting for 8.2 percent of the total.

The real estate sector reported the highest job vacancy rate of 4.38 percent, followed by other services at 4.26 percent and the hospitality sector at 3.96 percent. (By Chen Cheng-wei and Y.F. Low)
