Government to extend cycling infrastructure project

A four-year project to improve Taiwan's cycling infrastructure will be extended for another two years to meet public demand, the Sports Administration said Friday.

The NT$1.2 billion (US$36 million) project, which started in 2013, will continue into 2018 with an additional budget of NT$600 million, it said. Under the project, administrative areas across Taiwan are given assistance to build local bikeways.

The extended plan will focus on the completion of a second round-the-island cycling route, according to the Sport Administration.

It said it will also examine the current cycling paths with a view to improving their quality, and will create more detailed cycling maps through the use of digital technology.

As of late 2014, Taiwan had a bikeway network of 4,486 kilometers, including the Sun Moon Lake path that was named by CNN as one the 10 most breathtaking cycling routes in the world. (By Lin Hung-han and Lee Hsin-Yin)
