Next spring expected to be warmest, wettest in years: CWB

Taipei, Dec. 25 (CNA) This coming spring in Taiwan is likely to be warmer and wetter than in previous years as the El Nino effects are the strongest since 1997, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday.

Although the latest incident of El Nino seems to have reached its peak and may start to weaken, Taiwan is likely to remain under its influence and see unusually heavy rainfall and high temperatures next spring as a result, the bureau said.

However, there are chances of cold spells in January and February in Taiwan, said CWB Forecast Center Director Cheng Ming-dean.

Due to El Nino, which has contributed to a warmer winter, Taiwan may record its second-highest annual average temperature this year, after it averaged 24.39 degrees Celsius in 1998, he said. (By Chen Wei-ting and Lee Hsin-Yin)
