New direct ferry service between Matsu, China's Fuzhou launched

Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) A new direct ferry service between the Taiwan-held Matsu Islands and Fuzhou in China's Fujian province was launched Wednesday.

The first direct ferries between Baisha Harbor on Beigan Island and the port of Huangqi , northeast of downtown Fuzhou, departed from Beigan and Huangqi at 11 a.m.

The route covers only eight nautical miles, and a single journey takes about 25 minutes, Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications has said.

It offers a much faster connection than the existing route between Nangan Island to the south of Beigan and Fuzhou, which takes about 90 minutes.

The new route is the fourth direct ferry service route between Taiwan's outlying islands along China's eastern coast and Fujian province.

Since Jan. 1, 2001, Taiwan and China have had direct trade, postal and transportation links, commonly known as "three mini links" -- between the Taiwan-controlled island chains of Kinmen and Matsu, and the Fujian ports of Xiamen, Quanzhou and Fuzhou.

The three other ferry routes are Kinmen-Xiamen, Kinmen-Quanzhou, and Matsu-Mawei. (By Lilian Wu)
