Cigu salt field to lure tourists with giant Cupid installation

Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) The Cigu salt field, a popular tourist site known for its salt mountains, will install a giant Cupid sculpture in a bid to attract tourists, its operators said Wednesday.

The 7-meter-long, 6.6-meter-tall sculpture of a reclining Cupid made of epoxy, putty and paper will be installed on top of one of the salt mountains, said Taiyen Biotech Co., the former state-owned salt company.

The installation, which cost NT$3 million (US$91,379) will be on the display through the end of March, said Taiyen Chairman Yang Chiu-hsing.

The salt field in Tainan City was once Taiwan's largest site for salt obtained through the evaporation of seawater.

However, as production stopped being economically viable, the company ceased operations in May 2002 and turned the area into a sightseeing destination. (By Pan Chih-yi and Lee Hsin-Yin)
