Eslite unveils cross-strait expansion plan

Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) The Eslite Group, one of the largest bookstore chains in Taiwan, plans to expand across the Taiwan Strait next year by adding new stores in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, said Eslite Spectrum Corp. general manager Lee Chieh-hsiu on Tuesday.

Lee unveiled the plans at a press conference on its future plans after Eslite opened its first bookstore in China in Suzhou on Nov. 29.

The three new Eslite outlets to be opened next year will be in Linkou in New Taipei, in Quarry Bay in Hong Kong and in Shanghai's Pudong District, according to Lee.

The chain also plans to open a store in Shenzhen in southern China in the second half of 2017, he said.

Eslite opened three new stores in Taiwan this year, in the Dream Mall in Tainan, the Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung and the Sogo department store's Zhongxiao branch in Taipei.

It also completed the renovation of seven existing stores in 2015.

The three new stores in Taiwan have attracted 5 million visitors to date, while a new store in Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong has drawn 1.22 million visitors since opening earlier this year.

The new Suzhou store has proven even more popular, drawing 1 million people in its first 20 days of operations, according to the company.

For the year, the traffic in Eslite's stores has increased 26 percent from a year earlier to 180 million people.

Eslite's stores in Taiwan offer 210,000 titles, compared with 100,000 titles in its stores in Hong Kong and 150,000 titles in the Suzhou outlet, Lee said.

Taiwan brings in 28,000 new books from abroad every year and cooperates with 2,000 publishers of Chinese-language books, Lee said. (By Wei Shu and Evelyn Kao)
