Acer's smartband off to good start in United States

Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) Acer Inc., one of Taiwan's leading personal computer vendors, said Tuesday that its Liquid Leap Active smartbands were well received by consumers in the United States when it made its debut there last week.

Acer sold 70,000 units of its Liquid Leap Active wearables and 30,000 interchangeable bands in their debut on a leading television shopping network in a 24-hour promotion on Dec. 13, the company said in a statement.

During the promotion, Acer offered deals with a 2-pack of Liquid Leap Active wearables and a 3-pack of interchangeable bands, drawing many holiday season shoppers, it said.

First unveiled in June at Computex Taipei, the ultra-lightweight Liquid Leap Active smartband is designed for socially and physically active consumers, Acer said.

"It can be operated by intuitive touch screen control, and allows consumers to track daily activities and exercise, as well as record their sleep time," it said.

"Timely notifications are sent when pre-set goals are met, which can encourage users to keep moving and stay fit."

The notifications can inform the wearer of incoming calls, texts, and social media messages, and provide meeting reminders, Acer said.

The device can also double as a remote control that takes control of music playback on their smartphones without touching the phone. (By Jeffrey Wu and Elaine Hou)
