Taiwan inks pact with NGO Orbis on pediatric eye care

Taiwan has signed an agreement with Orbis International, a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to saving eyesight worldwide, to cooperate in a project for prevention of blindness in children in West Bengal.

Taiwan's representative to India, Tien Chung-kwang, signed the pact on behalf of Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kolkata on Monday with Abu Raihan, Orbis International's project director of Asia.

The actual implementation of the project will be handled by the Sushrut Eye Foundation & Research Center, an advanced ophthalmology eye care institution hospital in Kolkata that maintains cooperative ties with Orbis International.

Under the agreement, the foreign ministry will donate US$80,000 to sponsor the purchases of ophthalmic equipment, mobile medical vehicles and related facilities and equipment.

The aim of the agreement is to develop a long-term, sustainable pediatric eye care system in West Bengal through the cooperation of Taiwan's government and Orbis International.

Taiwan's foreign ministry donated US$100,000 to fund an Orbis International children's eye center in Nepal in April 2012, with the money used to train eye specialists and subsidize eye surgery and prescription eyeglasses for children from impoverished families. (By Charles Kang and Evelyn Kao)
