Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Chen Chien-jen said on Sunday that the DPP would strive for new immigration policies if elected, to provide assurance and improve working conditions for immigrant laborers.

Attending the Sunday church service at Taipei’s St Christopher’s Church, which is a religious center for many foreign workers and their spouses, Chen said that he was thankful for the economic contribution immigrant workers made for the country, and that he will work to bring better working conditions and social security to immigrants if elected.

Chen added that it is essential for workers to have reasonable working hours and legal protection against unreasonable treatment, verbal violence and physical exploitation.

If elected, Chen said that the DPP will be determined to expedite application process for academic credentials verification for new immigrants, as well as to provide language-learning resources for children of immigrant families, so they can learn their parents’ mother tongue.
