Free employment services launched for new immigrants

"Free" employment services for new immigrants have recently been launched to help them land jobs in Taiwan, with the rate of successful job placements having reached a record high of 58 percent, the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) said Sunday.

"Many immigrants are industrious, hard-working and responsive to employers' demands, which is just what the current job market wants," said Liu Chia-chun, director of the WDA under the Ministry of Labor.

Helping new immigrants find jobs not only enables them to become economically self-reliant and attain a sense of achievement in their work, but also can supply an important labor pool for an aging Taiwanese society, Liu said.

There are more than 500,000 new immigrants in Taiwan, while over 40 percent of them need to work to support their families, according to official statistics. About 32.2 percent of new immigrants are covered by the government's labor insurance and 75.19 percent of those covered in the program earn a monthly salary between NT$20,000 (US$609) and NT$24,999, according to a recent Ministry of Labor survey.
