Siberian crane spotted in downtown Taipei is 'local'

Taipei, Dec. 18 (CNA) A Siberian crane spotted and captured near a train station in Taipei early Friday has turned out to be one that has lived in rural New Taipei for the past year. The bird was taken to a shelter of Taipei City's animal protection office after it apparently lost its way and landed near Songshan station in the city in northern Taiwan, according to a local newspaper. At first the bird, also known as the Siberian white crane or the snow crane, was thought to be the second to have landed in Taiwan in recent years. It later transpired, however, that the crane that has made a temporary home in a field in New Taipei City's western coastal area had not returned since flying away late Thursday. The crane that was taken to the shelter was subsequently identified as the young bird from neighboring New Taipei. The bird did not appear to have been injured, according to Apple Daily, which first reported the news about a Siberian crane having landed in Taipei City. The Siberian crane is an endangered species and there are said to be only a few thousand of the birds left in the world. The bird will be sent back to its home in New Taipei, where it has been looked after by a local farmer with help from bird lovers and animal rights groups.
