Taipei ranks 3rd in Asian cities of future report

Taipei is listed third overall out of 163 cities in the Asia-Pacific Cities of the Future 2015-2016 rankings compiled by the fDi Intelligence, a unit of the Financial Times, representing a jump from sixth place in the last rankings two years ago.

According to the fDi Intelligence, Taipei enjoys a robust economy and its economic potential is second, behind only Tokyo, while its business friendliness is ranked fourth.

Taiwan's capital, however, topped the rankings of mid-sized Asia-Pacific cities this year, and it performed the best in the economic potential and business friendliness categories when compared to similar- sized cities.

Citing Taipei's high level of education yet low cost of labor, the city is attractive to creative talent, with 24,280 patents registered between 2010 and 2014 -- the third-highest among all the cities on the list.

The report added that Taipei's low export and import costs, property registration fees and relatively cheap construction permits also helped it boost its business attractiveness.

Compiled every two years, Singapore has topped the list for the third straight time, while Tokyo was in second place thanks to its 10-year plan to turn the city into a global financial center. (By Lee Mei-yu)
