Slaughterhouse reports winter's first avian flu cases in Taipei

Chickens at a Taipei poultry slaughterhouse were confirmed to have been infected with avian flu, the first such cases in a Taipei poultry abattoir this winter, the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine said Wednesday.

The bureau said it received notification from a slaughterhouse in Taipei a day earlier that 32 chickens had displayed symptoms of avian flu during inspection.

The slaughterhouse handled 700 chickens that day.

It was later confirmed that the chickens were infected with H5 subtype avian flu, and were culled according to standard procedure. Disinfection was conducted at the slaughterhouse and its surroundings.

Shih Tai-hua, deputy director-general of the bureau, said the infected chickens came from a poultry farm in Mailiao, Yunlin County.

Although this was the first detection of avian flu in a Taipei slaughterhouse this winter, Yunlin poultry farms have reported several sporadic cases in weekly reports since the onset of cooler weather. (By Yang Shu-min and Lilian Wu)
