Taoyuan airport's north runway to reopen Dec. 24

The north runway at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is scheduled to reopen Dec. 24 after an overhaul that began in March this year, a spokesman for the airport's management company said Tuesday.

Ground testing has been completed, and flight tests, which kicked off last week, will be concluded Dec. 18, said Wen Yung-sung of Taoyuan International Airport Corp.

With the north runway back in operation, the airport will be able to handle 50 flights per hour on its two runaways, instead of the maximum 32-33 flights at present, Wen said, noting that the punctuality rate will also be raised from the current 85 percent to 98 percent.

The north and south runways at the airport, Taiwan's main gateway, have been undergoing major overhauls since last year.

The south runway resumed operations in February, ahead of the busy Lunar New Year travel period, and the north runway was closed a few weeks later.

The reopening date of the north runway was brought forward from the originally planned Jan. 8, 2016, thanks to the smooth progress of the construction work, the company said. (By Wang Shu-fen and Elizabeth Hsu)
