Plane crash survivor donates fire-fighting equipment to rescuers

A Kaohsiung resident who survived a plane crash in last year on the outlying island of Penghu has donated fire- fighting equipment worth nearly NT$1 million (US$30,571) to the Fire Bureau under the Penghu county government.

More than a year after TransAsia flight GE 222 crashed on Penghu, Chang Chih-jen, one of the 10 survivors of the crash, showed his gratitude to the rescuers who saved his life by pulling him from the wreckage of the blazing aircraft.

In return for Chang's generosity, the Penghu county government presented him with a certificate of appreciation.

Chang, however, did not show up at the donation ceremony Tuesday because he has not fully recovered from the injuries he sustained in the crash, said Hung Yung-peng, chief of the Penghu Fire Bureau.

TransAsia flight GE 222, which took off from Kaohsiung on the evening of July 23, 2014, crashed on Penghu after aborting a landing in bad weather and attempting a go-around.

Forty-eight of the 58 people aboard were killed in the crash, including all four crew members. (By Lee Mei-yu)
