How the AP arranged to interview a killer

As part of a series looking at "The Other Disappeared" in Mexico, The Associated Press interviewed a man who has participated in disappearances to shed light on how and why they happen.

The AP worked for several months through contacts in Guerrero to arrange such an interview. A 29-year-old man was offered up by his bosses to discuss his work, and a three-person team traveled to meet him.

The man belongs to one of the criminal organizations operating in the Costa Grande region of the southern state of Guerrero. He agreed to speak on the condition that neither his identity nor the name of his organization be revealed. One of his bosses observed the interview.

While cartels operate under the radar when it comes to drug trafficking and other illegal business activities, they also operate somewhat openly in areas, and some bosses are well-known. Their attitude is not unlike that of the killer's -- they operate by their own code, and are not ashamed of what they do. The killer's story is consistent with conditions described by regional mayors and human rights officials, and with the tales of those who have witnessed or survived kidnappings.
