Foreign minister to visit El Salvador, Guatemala

Foreign Minister David Lin embarked on a trip Sunday to Central America, during which he will meet with senior government officials in Guatemala and attend a regional meeting of Central American countries set to take place in El Salvador, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the Dec. 13-20 trip, Lin will first visit Guatemala and meet with President Alejandro Maldonado and Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales to discuss issues of mutual concern, the ministry said in a statement issued Monday.

Lin will also confer the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon upon his Guatemalan counterpart, the ministry said, adding that Morales will also award Lin with a medal.

While in Guatemala, Lin will meet with President-elect Jimmy Morales and host a ground-breaking ceremony for a project to expand a highway in the Central American country that is being funded with assistance from Taiwan, the ministry said.

Lin will later visit El Salvador, where he will attend a Dec. 17 meeting of the Central American Integration System (SICA), an economic and political organization of Central American states, the ministry said.

During the meeting, Lin will share Taiwan's experience in helping with development in Central America, through the Mixed Commission for Cooperation between the Countries of the Central American Isthmus and the Republic of China (Taiwan), the ministry said.
