Thousands of opponents to new government march in Poland

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Tens of thousands of Poles angered by an ongoing constitutional conflict are marching in Warsaw to protest against the role the president and the new government have had in the swelling discord.

A new group, calling itself the Committee for the Defense of Democracy, had organized the march Saturday, in which opposition parties also participated. They argue that President Andrzej Duda is breaking the constitution with the steps he is taking concerning the appointment of new judges to the Constitutional Tribunal, the top law arbiter.

Duda is an ally of the conservative Law and Justice party that took power last month.

Some estimated 50,000 marchers, some who arrived from other cities, were chanting "Duda Must Go" as they were walking to the Presidential Palace in downtown Warsaw.
