Tigerair Taiwan launches direct flights to world heritage site

Tigerair Taiwan, a joint venture between Taiwan's China Airlines (CAL) and Singapore's Tiger Airways, launched its first cross-Taiwan Strait route to UNESCO world heritage site Zhangjiajie in China's Hunan province on Saturday. With nearly full capacity, the maiden flight took off with 176 passengers onboard Saturday morning from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, registering a load factor of 98 percent, according to the budget airline.

Many of the travelers said it was their first time taking a low-cost carrier, adding that they looked forward to the flying experience en route to the southern China destination.

The new air link to Zhangjiajie has made Tigerair Taiwan--currently operating nine routes to Thailand, Singapore, Macau and Japan--the first Taiwanese low-cost carrier to operate a cross-strait route.

The airline said Zhangjiajie-bound flights will operate at 6:35 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday, while return legs will depart at 11:35 a.m. on those days.

Zhangjiajie offers breathtaking natural scenery and is a popular filming and tourist destination. The budget airline, which celebrated its first anniversary on Sept. 5, has been eagerly expanding its flight network in Asia. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
