Cold weather expected later next week in northern Taiwan: expert

Taiwan could see more chilly weather beginning next Wednesday as a new cold air mass moves in, according to a local weather expert.

Temperatures could fall low as 11 degrees Celsius in coastal areas and 13 degrees in parts of northern Taiwan, said Daniel Wu, the former head of the Central Weather Bureau's weather forecast center and now a professor at National Central University.

The Central Weather Bureau confirmed that Taiwan is likely to experience the effect of a cold air mass next week. The lowest temperatures are likely to be seen late Wednesday and early Thursday, it said.

According to the bureau's current forecasts, temperatures in northern Taiwan will generally range from 15 to 20 degrees on Dec. 16 and 14 to 20 degrees the next day.

The cold air mass will also bring moisture in northern and eastern parts of the island, the bureau said, while dry weather is expected to continue in central and southern Taiwan. (By Chen Wei-ting and Elaine Hou)
