MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico says it has helped German authorities to detect 24,700 liters (6,525 gallons) of fake tequila that was going to be imported into Germany.
Mexico's tax authority said the liquor was made from agave, the plant that yields the raw material for tequila.
But real tequila must be made from a certain kind of agave, and only in specified areas of Mexico.
The seized tequila was dumped down a drain at a waste treatment plant in Hetlingen, Germany.
The tax office said Thursday it had tipped German authorities off after detecting the shipment.
Mexico said such measures were needed to protect the controlled domain name of Tequila.
