KMT's vice presidential candidate's husband resigns amid controversy

Huang Tung-Hsun resigned as head of the Judicial Yuan's Department of Government Ethics on Thursday amid allegations of real estate speculation by his wife Wang Ju-hsuan, the vice presidential candidate on the ruling Kuomintang's (KMT) ticket.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Huang had given a verbal resignation notice, which it said the Agency Against Corruption would consider.

Asked later in the day about her husband's resignation, Wang said she was " not sure of his situation."

Wang said she and her husband are novices when it comes to elections and she is willing to work harder to meet the public's expectations.

Since Nov. 19, when Wang was named as Eric Chu's running mate on the KMT presidential ticket, she has been plagued by allegations of property speculation.

According to the allegations, she bought several military housing units in the 1990s and resold most of them a few years later.

Wang has admitted that she and her husband purchased 12 military housing units, starting in 1993, and resold nine of them before 2003.

She said that at the time she did not think there would be a problem, once the transactions were legal. She has promised to donate the profits from the deals, but has not specified where the money would go. (By Tsai Pei-chi, Tang Pei-chun and Lee Mei-yu)
